Used Penn reels are probably the best buy you can get on the fishing market today. Just because they are used doesn’t mean they are broke and won’t catch fish anymore. Some of the best deals you can find on the market today are for quality used Penn reels. I personally have picked up my fair share of these reels time and again from various places. Garage sales, yard sales, estate sales. Sometimes all these reels need is a little tenderness and some well placed drops of oil and they are as good as they were coming out of the box. I have on occasion had to turn some into the local shops for a quick tune up and some new drag washers installed but thats pretty much the typical maintenance that I would do anyways for most of my reels from time to time.
I could probably open up a used Penn fishing reel and do what needs to be done to them to change these parts out but it’s not that expensive to send them off for a cleaning and drag replacement. I take most of mine to our local Academy store back in the fishing department where they work with this outside service for this type of reel maintenance. Been very happy and satisfied with the service and quality of the repairs.
Sometimes Penn reels can be a little hard on the pocket book and one way that I’ve combated this is by picking up the used penn reels whenever and wherever I can find them when the price is right.

Even if you already have some used penn reels laying around the house or shed, now might be a good time to start digging them out and bringing them back to life with a good yearly cleaning, drag washer replacement and fresh spool of line. You may just be surprised at the amount of life that one of your used penn reels still has in it.
