Sometimes when you are out looking for a used penn international or any other reel for that matter you just don’t really know what to look for. One things for sure is that if you can get your hands on it you should check out all the major features that comes on the reel to see that they are all in working order. You don’t want to go out there and start giant south Florida tarpon fishing with something that’s not going to stand up to the job at hand. Trust me, these fish have been known and will always be known as reel and line breakers. Of course some of them are just going to look a little beat up and all but that’s ok as its a fishing reel and just won’t stay in a pristine state forever, besides you buy them to take them out and fish not to sit in your garage all pretty.
That being said you should make sure that by far and utmost that the reel will actually reel. When you turn the handle you want the spool to spin. But these penn internationals have a lot more to them than just the cranking of the handle. Check that the clicker and drags all work and the different settings of the drag and spool system are functioning properly. If I can find a smooth one that’s got some scratches in the gold but works quite well and I can pick it up cheap instead of paying the several hundred up to a thousand that some of these penn internationals bring, you know my money is going to be well spent.
Instead of listing them all out, I found this video out on youtube that does a pretty good job going thru each of the different key points to look for when deciding on a used penn international. Of course sometimes you can’t get your hands on one but when you can this is kind of the process to go thru to ensure that it is working properly.
